Four SVP-BTC60 drifters have been deployed in the Black Sea

Four SVP-BTC60 drifters were successfully deployed in the Black Sea in late August 2004. This deployment was made from ship of opportunity “Sevastopol-1” along the lane “Sevastopol-Istanbul”.

The SVP-BTC60 drifter is a new Marlin-Yug project based on standard SVP-B barometer drifter. It is equipped with digital thermoprofiling chain (nominal depth is 60m), which has 10 temperature sensors and depth sensor at the chains bottom. Data from depth sensor is used to determine temperature sensors locations when chain has deflection from vertical orientation. Using newest electronics and modern technology in design of SVP-BTC60 provides the SVP-B lifetime together with significant enhancement of information efficient at low cost.

The SVP-BTC60 is intended for wide range scientific ocean applications, for example, investigation of the vertical temperature stratification variability of active layer, validation of the earth remote sensing models, etc. It is unique low-cost marine equipment with possibility to record the vertical temperature profile data with high temporal resolution (one hour). Quantity and disposition of chains temperature sensors may be optionally changed by user request.
