Since 2009 all the Marlin-Yug drifters are equipped with real-time clock

Introducing of RTC (Real Time Clock) in buoy’s electronics is the technical solution to be in compliance with WMO requirement about better quality of numerous weather forecasting by means of buoy measurements in round hours. There are two versions of RTC installed on our buoys. The first is a factory installed RTC, based on DS3231 chip from Maxim. The DS3231 is an extremely accurate real-time clock with an integrated temperature-compensated crystal oscillator (TCXO). The device incorporates a battery input, and maintains accurate timekeeping when main buoy power is interrupted. Due to high long-term accuracy of TCXO the device provides long-time stability of hourly samples for full buoy lifetime. This RTC can be used for Argos or Iridium drifters without GPS receiver. Another version of RTC based on periodically GPS adjustments of buoy clock. This guarantees GPS-accuracy of timekeeping during buoy lifetime.
